Helmsdale & Highland Games 2015

Helmsdale

Not a place that I would call very picturesque but all in all a very pleasant town with a good Chippy and surrounded by nice walks in a gorgeous setting. We embarked on this journey to walk and so walk is what we did.

We chose a path that would take us to the top of Eldrable Hill where we had a some very nice views over the countryside and moors. The walk was about 13km and ascended 410m. All in all a pleasant not to strenuous walk.

The Highland Games

We arrived in Helmsdale just in time to see experience the end of the Helmsdale Highland Games 2015.  For more information on Highland games visit the Scottish Highland Games Association. The weather was ok and we where even allowed in at half price. Thank you Helmsdale.

The main events where: Running, Heavy Weights, Solo Piping, Light Field, Highland Dance but there where also things like Tug Of War and Haggis throwing. (such a pity I quite like Haggis).

Later that evening there would be music, dance and lots of Beer and Whisky. The games are quite fun to watch but some disciplines are quite tough like the Caber toss, Stone pull or the Weight over bar, but even the Fixi race on grass, not for me thanks. I guess it’s all part of the fun.

Here a couple of pictures.

For even more pictures visit Helmsdale Highland Games on Facebook. (you can even spot us on some of them)
