Hiking Cape Verde – A Resume of 10 Days

Hiking Cape Verde – A Resume of 10 Days

This is our final post on our 10 day trip to Hiking Cape Verde. The first and last days we spent in Mindelo on São Vicente to be close to the airport. From Mindelo It’s only a short drive from the Airport in São Pedro. We stayed in a small hotel only a few walking minutes from the ferry that took us to Santo Antão, our hiking destination. The Atlantic is known to be quite rough in this area, still…

Hiking in Cape Verde Part 5: Agua das Caldeiras – Ribeira de Torre

Hiking in Cape Verde Part 5: Agua das Caldeiras – Ribeira de Torre

If I had to choose a favorite hike in Cape Verde it would be a tough decision  between this one and the Pico d’Antonio one. It’s a spectacular descent (you coud walk the other way round, up, if you’re mad enough), you pass through breezy pine forests, the clouds, a marvellous mountain village and finally get to the bottom of Ribeira de Torre. This ribeira is many peoples’ favorite, and I can see why. The peaks around look absolutely dramatic….

Hiking in Cape Verde Part 4: Ponta do Sol – Fontainhas – Corvo and back

Hiking in Cape Verde Part 4: Ponta do Sol – Fontainhas – Corvo and back

This is a classic. Well, the official long version of this hike anyway, which extends between Ponta do Sol and the village Cha d’Igreja. It’s quite a long walk, for the most part unprotected from the brutal sun. We didn’t feel so well, so we decided to start walking in Ponta do Sol and see how far we get and then just turn around. The coastal walk is a nice change after all the Ribeiras we’ve seen. The landscape…

Hiking in Cape Verde Part 3: Corda – Coculi

Hiking in Cape Verde Part 3: Corda – Coculi

This is another hike you can do in either direction – we chose the easy one down again. There is also easy transport to Ribeira Grande from both ends. We planned to take an Aluguer from Ribeira Grande, and it looked good at the beginning. „Collectivo?“ we asked the driver and he nodded. But when after 15 minutes we still remained the only passengers in his Toyota Hiace, he told us we could either wait until 2 in the afternoon,…

Hiking in Cape Verde Part 2: Walking down from Cova de Paúl to Paúl Ribeira

Hiking in Cape Verde Part 2: Walking down from Cova de Paúl to Paúl Ribeira

This one is pretty famous, well at least it’s in both guidebooks we took with us. Still, you don’t have to fear masses of people there. On our way we met three other tourists. And two locals. It’s not a round trip, you can either go up (if you’re really tough, it’s 1000 meter ascent in just 3 kilometer or so), or down, like we did. We took a taxi to the crater. I guess you can try to…

Hiking in Cape Verde Part 1: Ribeira do Paúl – Pico d’Antonio – Figueiral – Passagem – Paúl

Hiking in Cape Verde Part 1: Ribeira do Paúl – Pico d’Antonio – Figueiral – Passagem – Paúl

This was the first proper hike we did after Henry was on the mend from his gastritis. And still, after we’ve done a couple of more hikes, remains to be our one of our favorites. From our guesthouse, Casa das Ilhas in the Paúl valley, we took an Aluguer up the ribeira, literally to the end of the road: Cabo da Ribeira. Next we asked our way to Cha de Mato. It was easy for like 15 minutes, while we…
